Brief Introduction


      In December, 1999, Physical Science College of Harbin Normal University was established through the merger of the former Department of Physical Education and Public Sports Department. Currently the college has set up three undergraduate disciplines, namely Physical Education, Sports Training, and Traditional and Ethnic Sports, two disciplines entitled to grant the master degree, namely Physical Education and Training and Science of Ethnic Traditional Sports, and one direction of graduate enrollment in Physical Education Curriculum and Teaching Methodology. Meanwhile, the college also recruits in-service training postgraduate from colleges and universities teachers, M.E., Master of Science in Physical Education, as well as those who with an equivalent academic background. In 2011 Physical Science College is authorized to entitle the graduate students with master degree in first class discipline "Physical Education", and to recruit post-graduate students in four second-class disciplines.

     Well-developed disciplines and programs is the lifeblood of the further development of educational system. In July, 2000, Physical Science College received the official authorization for setting up master¡¯s program in Physical Education and Training and became the Heilongjiang¡¯s first physical education college to have such authority. In December,2000 when the provincial government decided to set up and provide financial support to 100 provincial-level key disciplines during the ¡± Tenth Five-year Plan¡± period¡±, one of  the college¡¯s  discipline ¡°Physical Education and Training¡±, after rigorous reviewing, ascends to the ranks of  100 provincial-level key disciplines. In the year 2001, Harbin Normal University has been identified as a key physical education base by Ministry of Education. At the same time, it is also Heilongjiang province¡¯s training base of traditional and ethnic sports and specific vocational skills in sports industry.

   ¡¡At present the college has about 128 employees, of whom 110 are full time teachers, 18 are full professors, 44 are associate professors, and 8 are with Doctoral Degree. The structures of teaching staff¡¯s professional title, age, education background and academic origin are becoming increasingly rationalized. The college currently has 5 international referees and 5 national referees and the size of the college keeps on growing. The college now has 1456 undergraduate students, 69 post-graduates, and some 150 in-service education and postgraduate training course trainees.

    Prominent teaching and researching achievement are made by teachers of this college. In the area of scientific research, the college ascertains the academic position of many subjects and promotes favorable academic atmosphere. Their research topics, while give priority to undergraduate education, also lay emphasis on the education of the graduates. Regarding teaching as the core, and scientific research as the guide of their work, 18  teachers have published papers in the national key journals, 23 are in charge of national and provincial research projects, and some 60 are undertaking bureau-level and university level research projects. ¡°Field and Tracks¡±, "Gymnastics" have been named the provincial quality courses. In order to ensure teaching and research to be carried out smoothly, the College made an overall improvement of conditions in laboratory and reference room. At present the College owns a laboratory & teaching center covering a floor space of 406 square meters and 94 sets of experimental equipment. On the basis of existing equipments, the college newly purchased a series of advanced equipment such as Comprehensive Body Measuring Device, equipment for athletes¡¯ training fatigue detection and recovery, Ariel Performance Analysis System, Microplate Reader, Electronic Massage Table, MoNAK Bicycle Ergometer, Lactate Analyzer and other devices. Besides, the college boasts a separate library and reading room, with storage of 12,000 professional collections and more than 60 academic journals, provideing a strong guarantee for teaching and scientific research.

      As for the hardware facilities, apart from the sports stadium in the old Jiangnan Campus,  the college has set up in new campus in Jiangbei a 12,000 square meters modern sports center, including one 400 meter plastic track field, one sports competition hall, one  natatorium, Athletic Training Stadium including tennis court, basketball and volleyball court, gym, martial arts gym, a 400 meters volcanic rock track field, and 30 outdoor asphalt basketball and volleyball courts. These facilities, plus a teaching and office building, are great improvements over the teaching environment.

     College¡¯s athletic training and group work have continuously turned out to be successful. Its male and female basketball teams and football team has represented the Heilongjiang Province to take part in CUBA and CUFL. Its track and field team also participated in many national, provincial, and municipal competitions, making many record breaking achievements. The college advocates an open-door mode of running school and lay emphasis on foreign exchange. It has established a good cooperation relationship with London South Bank University, Russia Khabarovsk Normal University and other foreign universities. Appointed by the Chinese Language Council, students from the Department of Traditional and Ethnic Sports have made several performance tours to Britain, France and the United States, bringing the charm of traditional Chinese culture to foreign lands.

     The course of 50 years of vicissitudes, trials and hardships has revealed a great truth that under the guidance of Harbin Normal University¡¯s school-building policy, all the college faculty are high-spirited and confident to carry out pragmatic innovation and work hard in solidarity to promote the physical education of Harbin Normal University to a new level, struggling to build the college into the country's top provincial university sports science center at an early date.

Dean of the Physical Science College: Wang Shaofeng

Wang Shaofeng¡¯s Profile

Wang Shaofeng was born in Du'erbote County, Heilongjiang Province in March 1963. He graduated from Department of Physical Education of Harbin Normal University in 1986 with a Bachelor¡¯s degree in Education. In June, 2000, he received his Master degree from the Major of Education Economics and Management in the Department of Education of Harbin Normal University. And in July, 2009 he earned his Doctoral Degree from Major of Physical Education and Teaching Methodology in Nanjing Normal University. Wang Shaofeng is currently the Dean of the Physical Science College, professor and master's instructor in the Physical Science College, person in charge of Provincial Quality Course Gymnastics, and Distinguished Professor of Harbin Normal University. His Major Research Interests are Gymnastics teaching and training, physical education and teaching methodology. He had altogether published 5 academic works, 2 of them are monographs, and 8 thesis in core Sports journals such as "Journal of Physical Education," ¡°JOURNAL OF SPORTS AND SCIENCE ", "Sports Culture Guide", etc, presiding over 6 national and provincial/ministry-level research projects and 20 Bureau-level research projects. Among his many social affiliations, he is the Secretary-General of the Jiangbei Branch of the Heilongjiang College Sports Research Institute, director of Heilongjiang Institute of Physical Science, college professional title evaluation expert in Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education, and vice chairman of Harbin Roller Skating Association.
